An introduction to The Internet of Things (IoT)

There’s something that is revolutionizing how we live on a daily basis, and that’s The Internet of Things (IoT). IoT is a computing concept that describes a future where every day physical objects will be connected to the Internet. For me, IoT represents the next step towards the digitalization of society and our lives.

Explaining IoT with an interesting example.

It is difficult to define The Internet of Things because it involves a variety of technologies and procedures. It is said that Kevin Ashton, an expert on digital innovation, was the first person to coin the concept in 1999 when the Machine-to-Machine protocol was invented, and it caused the development of new and more connected devices.

I think there’s nothing better to exemplify IoT than intelligent homes, and I have many interesting things to say about this theme. The first House of the Future was built in 1989, it was a project by Chriest Titulaer, and it attempted to simulate how the future might look like. It had a lot of interaction between man and machine, and voice recognition was the most innovative thing about it.

Right now there’s something called Casa Jasmina, a series of experiments in home automation and the Internet of Things. Bruce Sterling, an American science fiction writer, had the initial idea of creating the open source connected home of the future. It is located in an industrial building in Italy, and it has more than 15 different objects or devices that are either made using open-source blueprints, or feature connected home technologies.

Some interesting devices that Casa Jasmina implements and uses are the artwork displays that show different patterns of colored lights in response to fluctuations in background levels of radiation, an open source connected lamp which changes color and light intensity via web-interface, and a smart energy management system which monitors energy demand while controlling energy consuming devices.

IoT is revolutionizing the world. With it, the physical world is becoming one big information system. The great Nikola Tesla said in 1926, "When wireless is perfectly applied the whole earth will be converted into a huge brain, and the instruments through which we shall be able to do this will be amazingly simple. A man will be able to carry one in his vest pocket”. We have reached that era, the future is now.
